Cyprus has always been a nation caught between its more poweful neighbors
of Greece and Turkey. These problems became more intense after World War
II and violence broke out. Britain, Greece, Turkey, and Cypriot leaders
agreed to a plan for an independent republic with constitutional rights
guaranteed for the Turkish minority.
Archbishop Makarios was elected President in 1960. He was re-elected in
1968 and 1973. The Cypriot National Guard and officers from Greece
took over the government in 1974 and named Nikos Sampson as President.
Makarios fled the country. The Turks, afraid of Cyprus becoming united with
Greece because of Sampson's support for this idea, invaded the island.
Eventually Makarios was reinstated as President until his death in 1977. A
separate Turkish Cypriot federated state was established. In 1976 a president
was elected and an assembly set up. Greeks have been kicked out of the
Turkish Cypriot federated state with Turks from the island and mainland
replacing them. Now Cyprus is divided into two parts , Greek and Turkish,
with a U.N. force deployed on the demarcation line.
The new nation established in the northern part of the island was called the
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus but is still not recognized by the other
nations except Turkey.
